Day 14: Bonar Bridge to Tongue.
The Cycle Computer only shows 52 miles tonight, an easier day,
though it may be lying, because we've travelled through some
tremendous downpours, thunder and lightning this afternoon, and
the computer just packs up in the wet, only resuming when the sun
dries it out again!! Still, a warm wind, unusual for this part of
the world.
I'ts now a beautiful evening on the north Scottish coast, 9.23pm and the sun has no thought of setting. But the view through the Youth Hostel window (its a converted shooting lodge) is obscured by the usual dense cloud of midgies. The postcard that we've bought along the way suggests they are the origin of the highland fling.
Much of today through open moorland, stunning rugged scenery with low cloud on the hilltops. Then the occasional tunnel of Forestry Commission trees.
Had a quick look this morning at Carbisdale Castle, the Youth Hostel that was fully booked, apparently with coachloads of French and German schoolkids. An impressive castle. Even tonights hostel seems more the home of foreigners than Britishers, some cyclists, some walkers.
Want to pay a special tribute tonight to Ian Minty, our driver, luggage handler, fixer and general all round good mate. We couldn't have done it without you. Thanks.
Anyone heard tomorrow's forecast? John O'Groats, here we come!
